Music Copyist & Music Engraver - Music Preparation

Music preparation can mean copying or music engraving. What is the difference between a music copyist and a music engraver? Copyists work towards a single event, usually a recording session or performance, and engravers produce scores for publication. An engraver's work is far more detailed, as they produce the definitive score for a piece of music to strict publisher's standards.

My engraving experience came during my time at the Boston based music engraving company Notecraft, LLC. Notecraft's customers include publishers such as Hal Leonard, EMI Christian Music Group, Edition Peters, and MorningStar. Most of our engravings are distributed globally both in print and online. As part of the Notecraft team I contributed to many books such as Pat Metheny's "One Quiet Night," Jewel's "The Best Of," The Crowning Glory: New Descants for Church Choirs, Marilyn Manson's "Lest We Forget," Velvet Revolver's "Contraband", and William Albright's "Pit Band".

I am an excellent music copyist and my work has the grace, clarity, and accuracy of professional engraving. I use both Sibelius and Finale for music notation. Some recent clients are film composers Alan Menken, Ruy Folguera, Tyler Bates, and Marc Streitenfeld, contemporary composers Vivian Fine, Richard Egizi, and Max Schubel, and Japanese pop star Yazawa. My scores and parts have been used by groups such as the Canberra Pops orchestra in Australia, the Cinema Expo convention in Amsterdam, the Polish National Radio Symphony, the Kiev Philharmonic Orchestra in the Ukraine, recording orchestras in Prague and Hollywood, and many other recording studio, school, and university ensembles.
